  • Oracy during Sports week

    Wed 01 Jul 2026

As part of Sports Week, every class took part in an exciting World Cup Oracy Challenge, with each year group representing a different nation competing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Children worked collaboratively to write, rehearse and perform persuasive speeches, using age-appropriate oracy skills from our progression map. Reception and Key Stage 1 classes created video presentations, while Key Stage 2 classes performed live in front of the whole school during assembly. Throughout the project, pupils developed key speaking and listening skills including eye contact, voice projection, purposeful body language, stage presence, the use of pauses for effect and constructing persuasive arguments supported by evidence. They demonstrated impressive confidence, teamwork and audience awareness, bringing football history, famous players and national pride to life in their performances. Mrs Waugh had the difficult task of judging the speeches and, after a fantastic showcase from every class, Year 3, representing Brazil, were crowned the winners for delivering the most persuasive and memorable rallying cry. The event was a wonderful celebration of both sport and oracy, providing every child with an authentic opportunity to communicate confidently, persuade an audience and showcase the speaking skills they have developed throughout the year.

  • Cheviot Primary School Recognised as a Voice 21 Centre of Excellence

    Fri 26 Jun 2026

We are delighted to announce that Cheviot Primary School has been recognised as a Voice 21 Centre of Excellence.

Following three years of developing oracy across the school and successfully completing a rigorous accreditation process, Cheviot has joined a select group of around 150 schools nationally to receive this recognition.

The award reflects our commitment to developing pupils' confidence, communication and vocabulary through purposeful talk across the curriculum. From classroom discussions and collaborative learning to presentations and debates, oracy is embedded in everyday teaching and learning at Cheviot.

This achievement belongs to our whole school community. Our staff have worked hard to ensure high-quality oracy is part of every classroom, while our children have embraced every opportunity to develop as confident, thoughtful communicators who listen carefully, explain their ideas and learn from one another.

We would also like to thank our parents and carers for their continued support. The confidence our children develop in school is strengthened by the encouragement they receive at home, and this recognition reflects that partnership.

We are proud to display our Voice 21 Centre of Excellence banner outside the school as a celebration of what we have achieved together. While we are delighted to have received this recognition, we see it as another step in our journey to ensure every child leaves Cheviot with the confidence and communication skills to thrive.

A huge well done to our pupils, staff and families on this fantastic achievement.

  • Sports week

    Mon 22 Jun 2026

Sports Week was a huge success, with every year group throwing themselves into a packed programme of activities that showcased teamwork, confidence and brilliant sporting spirit.

    Sports Day

Key Stage 2 kicked off the festivities with their Sports Day, demonstrating resilience and a mature approach to sport. Our Nursery children followed with joyful races that highlighted their growing confidence and enthusiasm, while Key Stage 1 impressed with their determination and brilliant effort in every event.

    Golf and Handball

The children excelled in their golf sessions, showing enthusiasm and rapid skill development. They also thoroughly enjoyed their handball sessions, fully embracing the fast-paced nature of the game and quickly picking up skills such as passing and intercepting.

    Badminton

One of the standout highlights of Sports Week was the badminton coaching with Miss Luckley, which the children absolutely loved. Her engaging and supportive teaching style made the sessions great fun, and the children quickly picked up skills such as serving, footwork and rallying.

    HYROX

The HYROX sessions were tough, but the children showed incredible resilience and never gave up. They were pushed outside their comfort zones yet consistently encouraged one another and completed every station with great determination.

    Trampolining

The children did brilliantly in their trampoline sessions, filling the hall with smiles and energy. They quickly picked up basic trampoline skills, from controlled bouncing to simple routines, and their confidence grew with every jump.

    Street Dance

The street dance sessions were a huge hit with the children throwing themselves into the routines, showing fantastic rhythm and brilliant moves, and smiling from start to finish.

    Competition Events

The children performed brilliantly in all their competition events. Nursery and Reception set the tone with their exciting races, confidently running against one another and filling the field with cheers. Key Stage 1 impressed in their multi-skills activities, expertly led by the Year 5 pupils, who supported and encouraged the younger children with maturity and enthusiasm. Year 3 and Year 4 demonstrated excellent teamwork and tactical awareness in their netball matches, while Year 5 and 6 showed great skill, focus and sportsmanship in cricket. Across every event, the children gave their best and supported one another.

    Obstacle Course

The obstacle course was another tough challenge, but every child rose to it with determination and spirit. From climbing and crawling to jumping and sprinting, the course tested strength, stamina and resilience. What made it truly special was the way the children encouraged one another and refused to give up.

  • Year 6 Residential 2026

    Wed 10 Jun 2026

Year 6 Residential Visit to Great Tower, Windermere

Our Year 6 children last week enjoyed an unforgettable residential visit to Great Tower in the beautiful Lake District. Despite some changeable weather, the children embraced every opportunity that came their way and demonstrated excellent enthusiasm, resilience and teamwork throughout the trip. From the moment we arrived, the children threw themselves into a wide range of outdoor activities designed to challenge them, develop their confidence and encourage them to work together. Activities included archery, crate stacking, zip wiring, axe throwing, bouldering and a variety of team-building challenges, all of which required determination, communication and perseverance.

One of the highlights of the residential was paddle boarding on Lake Windermere. Although poor weather meant the sessions had to be rearranged, the staff at Great Tower worked hard to ensure that every child was still able to take part. The children loved the experience of getting out on the water and showed great courage as they learned new skills and stepped outside their comfort zones. Away from the organised activities, the children also enjoyed exploring the stunning surroundings, including a walk to Tower Rock, where they were rewarded with spectacular views across the Lake District. The residential was also an opportunity for the children to develop their independence. Many experienced being away from home for the first time, making their own beds, putting on duvet covers, pillowcases and sheets, organising their belongings and taking responsibility for themselves throughout the stay.

The evenings were just as memorable as the daytime activities. After busy days of adventure, the children enjoyed spending time together in their lodges, playing games with friends, taking part in dance-off competitions and, of course, listening to the occasional spooky story before bed. They also enjoyed toasting marshmallows and making s'mores around the campfire before joining in with songs and laughter. Throughout the visit, the children were a credit to themselves, their families and the school. They demonstrated kindness, camaraderie and friendship, supporting one another through challenges and celebrating each other's successes. We hope that, in years to come, they will look back on their time at Great Tower with great fondness and remember it as one of the defining experiences of their primary school years – a trip filled with adventure, independence, friendship and memories that will last a lifetime.
