Geography

Geography helps children make sense of the world around them – from their local area to distant places across the globe. It encourages curiosity about the Earth’s landscapes, people, environments, and how they all connect.

What do children learn about?

Local geography and the features of their own area
The UK and its countries, cities, rivers, and mountains
Continents, oceans, and countries around the world
Physical features like weather, climate, volcanoes, earthquakes, and rivers
Human features such as towns, cities, transport, and land use
Environmental issues like sustainability, pollution, and climate change
Maps, globes, and digital tools to explore and understand places
How people interact with the environment and each other

How is Geography taught?
Geography is often taught through maps, fieldwork, exploration, stories, photographs, atlases, globe work, outdoor learning, and discussion. Children may visit local places, take part in projects, and explore different cultures and environments through first-hand experiences and multimedia.
