Design & Technology
DT means Design and Technology. It is the process of research, design and creation to produce a product with a specific purpose and for a specific person.
What do children learn about?
At Cheviot Primary DT lessons encourage children to follow the stages of design; to build confidence in their abilities as designers, makers and creators of the future and to provide them with skills for life and a possible career. We encourage children to think outside the box, be different and use their imagination to release their creative side with a focused end goal, and in doing so demonstrate their personal creativity. They will overcome challenges, enhance skills and have increased confidence by the end of the project.
How is DT taught?
DT is often taught through exploration of existing objects that provide a solution to a problem. It will often involve taking apart a mechanism or exploring moving parts to consider how elements work. Children then consider why this is a successful design and the features that ensure it meets the deign brief. Pupils will collaboratively question, discuss and debate what success criteria our end products need to include to meet the design brief. They then plan, make, test, adjust and evaluate through the exploration, design and construction phases. Resilience is built to overcome obstacles and make changes to improve their design after testing.
